Ubuntu 7.10

Ubuntu Linux, ubuntu 7.10 No Comments »

I like the look of 7.10, for me it is getting closer to a desktop that a skilled average user could get into. One disappointment I did have was that the LiveCD, gave an “out of range message” on one monitor and not on another, this will be a put off for some investigating Linux.

Well I have done what I said to myself I would not do, that’s jump right in on a new release - but that’s life. I recently updated a box to a AMD dual core processor 4000 with 2gb ram. So why not get it running with Ubuntu, the latest version. It had previously had 7.04. At first I thought I could change the had drives over and take advantage of the new power, but that did not work, not sure the reason, but I could not spend the time figuring out the error messages. So I put the original 80gb hard disk in and formatted it, to install 7.10.
Since the new install of 7.10 RC version, this is what I have done to the system, its a bit of a log so I can keep track of what I get up to…

Networking, as I have a couple of computers on a network, I installed smaba and smbfs through the terminal. I did not change any of the settings things were done the same as with the previous versions http://www.worklifematters.com.au/craigsblog/article/networking-peer-to-peer-ubuntu-and-windows.

Applications, I installed the additional applications (audio, graphics, office) I like using the Synaptic Package Manager.

Thunderbird Email - Now changing systems, email is always a problem! This was not a difficult process to move the email files, just a bit of trial and error.

  1. Firstly I installed Thunderbird (TB) through Synaptic
  2. Then I started TB, as soon as it asked me to do something, I took the first opportunity to exit. This activated that TB directory in your user account - /home/you
  3. Then found the location of the new user installed files on my account, they are hidden files (used the view hidden files option on the file manager (nautilus) to locate the directory name “mozilla-thunderbird”
  4. I then copied the user TB files from my existing computer to a neutral location. These original files are also located on the original computer in the “/home/oldyou” and are hidden files, so I used the show hidden files from the view menu in the file manager.
  5. Now I made a copy of the new hidden folder “/home/you/.mozilla-thunderbird/” folder so I had a fall back if anything goes wrong - now I had “/home/you/.mozilla-thunderbird(copy)/”
  6. Next I copied the contents from the defult folder (something like) xwed45xc.default into the new folder at “home/you/mozilla-thunderbird/ [something like] kkdjfmd.default”
  7. Started TB, it then updated the folder - you know it worked if you see your old folder structure on the left.

This is the steps to get it to work, it took me a few versions of this, to come up with the above steps.

16 Oct 2007 - installed MS fonts, they are available through Synaptic Package Manager. Also installed new icon set, OSX, it uses Tango set of icons - they are available through the Synaptic, then down loaded and installed the OSX set via the Syste - Preferences - Appearance options - http://nekohayo.googlepages.com/icons
